Answer #1

QUESTION 1

The main feature that differentiates them is the presence of a structure called “chlorosome”. The discovery of the Chloracidobacterium thermophilum was made by collecting large amounts of water from hydrothermal sources, isolating the bacteria and sequencing them on a large scale. DNA sequences revealed what types of genes and organisms were present in the samples. C. thermophilum grows near the surface of microbial mats next to cyanobacteria, in places where there is light and oxygen, at temperatures between 50 and 66 degrees Celsius. It has been isolated in three Yellowstone hydrothermal sources. What makes it a unique specimen is that it has chlorosomes, a special structure that bacteria use to collect energy from sunlight, which contains about 250.000 chlorophyll molecules each. No aerobic microorganism with chlorosomes was previously known, and C. thermophilum manufactures two different types of chlorophyll capable of competing for light with cyanobacteria.
