Question

The inclined-tube manometer shown has D = 110 mm and d = 8.0 mm. (a) Determine the angle, θ, required to provide a 5 : 1 increase in liquid deflection, L, compared with the total deflection in a regular U-tube manometer. (b) Evaluate the sensitivity of this inclined-tube manometer. Assume that manometer is filled with Meriam red oil. Use Table A.1

Answer #1

By continuity equation;

x A_{tank} = LA_{tube}

Rightarrow x(pi/4)D^2= L(pi/4)(d)^2

Rightarrow x= L left ( rac{d}{D} ight )^2

For a U shaped manometer;

Delta P = ho g h

For inclined manometer;

Delta P = ho g (x +Lsin heta)

Equating both pressures;

Rightarrow ho g h = ho g (x +Lsin heta)

Rightarrow h = (x +Lsin heta)

Rightarrow h =L left ( rac{d}{D} ight )^2 +Lsin heta

sin

2 5-1

Rightarrow heta = 11.23^o

For Meriam Red Oil (Using Table A-1);

SG0.827

Sensitivity is given as;

s = rac{L}{h(SG)}

Rightarrow s = rac{5}{0.827}

S- 6.046

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
