Question

4. What does the operating head and flow rate of a pump mean in terms of how much water can be pumped and how much water elevation can be lifted? Does the operating head of a pump mean that is the elevation of water than can be lifted by the pump through the system? Why or why not?

Answer #1

(a)Operating head of a pump can be defined as the total height above the suction inlet that a pump can lift a fluid(in our case-water).So the operating head gives you the height of the water that can be pumped by the pump above the suction inlet in feets/metres.

Flow rate of a pump can be defined as the volume of fluid that is pushed by the pump throgh the pumping system in a given time.So the flow rate gives the total quantity of water pushed by the pump in Litres/second or Gallons/minute.

(b) So, yes operating head can be defined as the elevation of water that can be lifted by the pump through the system above the suction inlet after taking into account the frictional losses if any.
