remember the Exxon Valdez oil spill and the effects that it had on the ecosystem. It was the largest oil spill up to that time. You can read about it at http://www.evostc.state.ak.us/?FA=facts.QA. Another disaster that is more recent is the Deepwater Horizon explosion that occurred in the Gulf of Mexico only a few years ago. That incident killed 11 people and resulted in the release of oil that continued for more than 2 months. You can read about this incident and compare it to the Exxon Valdez. What do you think we can do to make drilling and transporting oil safer?

Answer #1

As we are adopting already, more advanced techniques should be used to do technical work of drilling, mining and transporting oil safely like Horizontal drilling, Multilateral drilling, Extended reach and Complex path drilling.

In addition to that, there should be sufficient manpower on the ship to switch between the working hours and each one could get more than sufficient time to sleep, and rest out. The technical advancement of machines also holds the responsibility of technically well trained staff members with extensive knowledge to handle the ship in any dangerous circumstances. Working hours should be very short and working conditions should be healthy and fair enough, not to distract mental attention. Any issue if arises, should be discussed and solved in group. There should be no monotony.

Bacteria and other microbes can be used to "clean up" an oil spill by breaking down oil into carbon dioxide and water. Two samples isolated from the Deepwater Horizon leak in the Gulf of Mexico were labeled A and B. The DNA of each was isolated and the percent thymine measured in each sample. Sample A contains % thymine and sample B contains % thymine. Assume the organisms contain normal double‑stranded DNA and predict the composition of the other bases.
