First defined in the 1st century CE was a steam engine, or a heat engine that performs mechanical work using steam. Nevertheless, Savery's engine designs in 1698 and Newcomen's engine in 1712 were used commercially for the first time and stimulated the further advancement of steam engineering. During the Industrial Revolution, steam engines began to replace water and wind power, and gradually became the dominant power source in the late 19th century and remained so in the early decades of the 20th century, when the more powerful steam turbine and internal combustion engine contributed to the gradual replacement of steam engines. The steam turbine has become the most common method of driving electrical generators. The methods of reviving the reciprocating steam engine as the foundation for the new wave of modern steam engineering are being studied.
Given the revolutionary methods of steam power as early as the first century A.D. These forms were demonstrative by Greek scientists and never intended for practical or commercial use. Steam technology was not used for practical purposes until the Renaissance in Europe. European thinkers and early scientists began experimenting with steam power in the seventeenth and early seventeenth centuries, often to generate power to pump water.
When steam power grew in popularity, people began trying to use the engines to drive both sea and land vehicles. William Murdoch made an important breakthrough in this method in the 1780s. Steam was used only to drive up and down pistons until Murdoch's study. Murdoch developed a method for driving reciprocal, circular motion using a steam engine.
Steam engines could be used to turn wheels with Murdoch's innovation. This ability was first properly used in a steam-powered train created and used by Richard Trevithick in southern Wales in 1804. By the 1830s, most freight and passenger trains in Northern England were running on steam. Steam-powered engines also gained popularity in America throughout the 19th century, and at the Promontory Summit in Utah, steam engine trains were the first to ride the transcontinental railway completed in 1869.
When we consider from the Industrial Revolution, the steam engine has been largely replaced by electricity and the internal combustion engine (gas or diesel). In some parts of the world and in antique locomotives, some old steam engines are still used. Nevertheless, in various applications, steam power is still widely used around the world.
