Virus are the most intriguing entities on earth. They have been with us since millions of years yet we have no physical fossils to prove them. We today know many such instances or events in the evolution which are shaped by viruses.

1. Horizontal gene transfer . This led to evolution of new genes and acquiring of new phenotypes.

2. Basic framework of DNA replication. The viral DNA provide the basic ideas of replication origin and enzymes for DNA replication.

3. Evolution of toxin genes and pathogenicity.

4. Creation of genetic codons and their redundancy.
