After reviewing video clip and readings, answer the following questions with a substanial reply to each. Make sure your answers are in complete sentences, each question response should be at three to four sentences each.

1. It is fun and interesting! History is simply the study of people. Nothing is more interesting than other people. Think about some of the more popular forms of entertainment in society today like reality television, professional sports, social media, etc. It is all about other people! Imagine you are in a restaurant and you see someone throw a plate of food at another patron's face (very poor decision). Are you going to turn away before you see the reaction of the patron's face. No way! You want to know what happens. History is full of events and stories just as exciting as the patron's face full of food. It is about people and their reactions. Describe other people that interest you and explain why they are interesting.

2. History connects the past to the present. History serves as evidence as to why people act the way they do and gives us guidance in our decisions today. Most of the decisions we make today are based on information from the past. If you ride your bicycle off a huge ramp and break your arm, you will probably be less likely to try the same jump again. If you never complete your homework and fail a class, you should learn that you need to complete your homework for future classes if you want to pass. History provides numerous lessons that can help us make decisions today. Sometimes those decisions affect large scale matters such as the future of Virginia, America, or perhaps the entire world! We are affected the most however, by the individual decisions we make every day. History provides lessons for us to make better decisions today. Please tell about a time when you learned from the past to make a better decision.

3.Studying history helps us develop essential skills we need for life. Studying history doesn’t just tell us what happened in the past, it builds important skills we will need our entire lives. History develops the ability to read a map (you are lost in the wood and your phone has no battery charge), debate or making an argument (you are trying to convince your family to buy pizza for dinner), assess the validity of evidence (can I believe this website that says Abraham Lincoln was a vampire slayer?), critical thinking and decision making (deciding what college to attend or what job you want when you get older), and many more! Which of these skills do you believe is the most important and why?

4. To inspire us! History teaches us that a single individual with great determination or a committed group can change the world. We will learn about inspiring individuals that overcome devastating hardships through hard work and determination. “It is from numberless acts of courage that human history is shaped. Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the life of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.” -Robert F. Kennedy Who or what inspires you?

Choose one of the quotes and explain how it relates to learning about history.

A. History is the version of past events that people have decided to agree upon. -- Napoleon Bonaparte

B. The farther back you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see. -- Winston Churchill

C. History teaches us that men and nations behave wisely once they have exhausted all other alternatives. --Abba Eban

D. History has been a continuous exercise in creative problem solving. -- Michael J. Gelb

E. In times like these, it is helpful to remember that there have always been times like these. -- Paul Harvey

Answer #1

The farther back you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see. -- Winston Churchill

The farther back you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see. -- Winston Churchill

History creates a connection between the past and present. History tells us how and why people behaved in the past. Thus, gives us guidance to make the proper decision in the present age. History provides numerous lessons that can help us make the decision today. Like if we study about the past world wars; we can understand the devasting nature of such wars. We can understand why those wars started and how it damaged the human civilization. From those learnings, we can make better decisions today to avoid such events in the future.

If we study the history of slavery, we could know how our actions created inequality in the past. How it badly affected society and culture. So, it will help us to take proper action to create harmony and equality in the present society. If we study the history of environment pollution, then we could understand how to balance the industrialization process to avoid its negative impact on the environment. Thus, through the study of history, we can know more about various events and situations of the past, which will help us to see things more precisely. Thus, the study of history helps us to take proper action to avoid the damage of past events.

These can be individual decisions, family decisions, business decisions or societal decisions. If you look around carefully, you will see that scarcity is a fact of life. Scarcity means that human wants for goods, services and resources exceed what is available. Resources, such as labor, tools, land, and raw...
