All vertebrates are chordates, but not all chordates are vertebrates. Compare the three subgroups hemichordata, cephalochordata, urochordata and explain the differences i) between the groups and ii) between those phyla and the vertebrates, iii) and describe the relationship of the hemichordates to other deuterostomes. Finally, iv) What physical feature found in all three groups is an advantage that led to the “pre-adaptedness” found in chordates?
Answer:
(i) Comparison and differences between the three groups:
Properties | Hemichordata | Cephalochordata | Urochordata |
Arrangement of notochord and nerve cord | Lack notochord and true dorsal nerve cord | Long notochord and nerve cord | Stiff notochord and dorsal hollow nerve cord |
Metamerism | Non-metameric | Metameric | Non-metameric |
Shape | Worm-like | Fish-like | Bag-like |
Reproduction | Separate sexes | Separate sexes | Hermaphroditic |
External body cover | Not covered by any exoskeleton | Not covered by any exoskeleton | Covered by tunic or test |
(ii) Both vertebrates and these phyla (except Hemichordata) have notochord and nerve cord, along with pharyngeal gill silts, post-anal tail at some point of their lifetime. But the main difference is that, vertabrates possess a vertebral column which protects the notochord and nerve cord but the chordates do not have any vertebral column.
(iii) In Hemichordates, there is a deuterostome-specific genomic cluster which consists of four order transcription genes. Development of pharyngeal gill silts, which is consisdered as the first morphological innovation of early deuterostomes, is attributed to this genomic cluster found in Hemichordates.

Researchers randomly assigned 322 moderately obese volunteers to one of three diets to study how the diets compare with respect to various outcomes such as weight loss, lipid profiles, blood pressure, and other indicators of health and metabolic function. The three diets included a low-carbohydrate diet, a low-fat diet, and a Mediterranean diet that consists of moderate fat and a high proportion of monounsaturated fats. All study participants worked at the same research center in Israel, where lunch (the main...

In the discussion, how do the authors explain the fact that
between digoxin and placebo there were no differences in all-cause
mortality but there were in hospitalizations?
A. They don't.
B. They argue that the sample size may not have been large
enough to detect differences in mortality.
C. They point out the fact that they had a borderline
significant finding for mortality due to worsening heart failure
and suggest that may help with heart failure but may cause bone...

(1 point) In the following questions, use the normal distribution to find a confidence interval for a difference in proportions pu - P2 given the relevant sample results. Give the best point estimate for p. - P2, the margin of error, and the confidence interval. Assume the results come from random samples. Give your answers to 4 decimal places. 300. Use 1. Explain the following in terms a highschooler would understand (from article Expression of HoxD Genes in Developing and Regenerating Axolotl Limbs, 1998): DISCUSSION: Expression of HoxD genes in developing axolotl limb buds. We have examined the expression of Hoxd-8, Hoxd10, and Hoxd-11 genes in axolotl limb buds and find many similarities between the patterns of expression in axolotls and those described for other vertebrates. Similarities are most pronounced in phases I and II (Nelson et al., 1996; Shubin et al.,...
Case 3: Recruiting CASE THREE: RECRUITING Case Objectives Recruiting is the first stage in which organizational plans for staffing come into contact with the labor market for employees. Before making any new recruiting effort, an organization needs to carefully consider the methods available and balance out the costs of each method with the organization’s needs. The recruiting case provides an opportunity to see how staffing managers develop plans for recruiting efforts. You will develop a recruiting strategy and a recruiting...

David’s Story “Life is difficult.” I once read these three trivial words in a book, but never knew how true to life and impactful they would be until one fateful fall evening. Before I begin, let me back up and tell you more about who I am and how I got here. I am a Caucasian male raised in a small conservative town in Maine by hard-working middle-class parents. My compassionate mother juggled raising three rambunctious children, me being the...
Using the book, write another paragraph or two: write 170
words:
Q: Compare the assumptions of physician-centered and
collaborative communication. How is the caregiver’s role different
in each model? How is the patient’s role different?
Answer: Physical-centered communication involves the specialists
taking control of the conversation. They decide on the topics of
discussion and when to end the process. The patient responds to the
issues raised by the caregiver and acts accordingly. On the other
hand, Collaborative communication involves a...
