Solution :-

The KMnO4 in presence of the NaOH acts as the oxidizing agent. It oxidizes the aromatic alkane chains to the carboxylic acid groups.

The benzilic carbon which contains the hydrogen oxidized to the carboxylic group.

KMnO4 will act to produce the carbonyl intermediate and then OH- from the NaOH will add OH to it.

Finaly result in the product in which carboxylic acid group is added. as shown in the reaction.
