You have a number of 100MW oil-fired power plants. Supply a small island (population of 1 million, some industry, some military) with electrical power. The average (day and night) use of electrical power is 0.5 kW/hour per person.

1.How many power plants would you need?

2. Where would you place them?

3. How would you distribute the power?

4. Can you assure 24 hour electrical power availability? What do you have to add to assure 24 hr electrical service?

5. What are the advantages?

6. What are the disadvantages?

7. What are the costs? What are the enviromental effects?

8. Is that kind of power generation sustainable?

9. Do you have excess electric power to convert other energy uses, such as transportation, to electricity?

10. if you could choose to use nuclear power plant, oil-fired power plant, wind turbine generators, and or solar photovoltaic systems. Which would you prefer and why. Would you use more then one or all? Explain?

Answer #1

1.How many power plants would you need?

ans) total power required by a person=24*0.5KW=12KW.

hence,total power required by island=10,000,000*12KW.=120MW.

--->power produced by one plant=100MW.

-->hence number of power plants required=120/100=1.2.

--->hence number of power plants=2.

2. Where would you place them?

--->well,there may be different ways to place the plants on the island.

---->one such way is to place them in two opposite corner of the island.

3. How would you distribute the power?

--->well,there are various ways to distribute the power.

--->one way is to supply power to half of island from one power plant,and other half of island by the other plant.

4. Can you assure 24 hour electrical power availability? What do you have to add to assure 24 hr electrical service?

--->24 hour electrical power availability cannot be assured.

--->ways to assure 24 hour availability is to create backup powerplant.

5. What are the advantages?

--->advantages:-

a)24 hour electicity.

b)no inconvenience in day to day work

c)more productivity.

d)better economy.

6. What are the disadvantages?

--->disadvantages:-

a)more cost.

b)the backup may remain useless or unused.

c)electricity loss.

7. What are the costs? What are the enviromental effects?

--->the cost in producing electricity.

--->cost in setting plant

environmental effects.

--->coal or fuel used to produce electricity lead to global warming.

---->depletion of resources.

8. Is that kind of power generation sustainable?

--->as long as electricity produced is efficiently distributed , power generation is sustainable.

9. Do you have excess electric power to convert other energy uses, such as transportation, to electricity?

-->yes,I have excess electric power to convert other energy uses, such as transportation, to electricity.

10. if you could choose to use nuclear power plant, oil-fired power plant, wind turbine generators, and or solar photovoltaic systems. Which would you prefer and why. Would you use more then one or all? Explain?

--->I would prefer solar photovoltaic systems because they are environment friendly.

    Combined cycle power plants are common because of their high efficiency and scalability. They typically combine a gas turbine cycle (the Brayton Cycle) with a steam turbine cycle (the Rankine Cycle) [1]. The goal of this project is to determine the operating efficiency and profitability of a realistic combined cycle power plant. The power plant is as follows: 1. A natural gas-fired Brayton cycle with mÛ air,Br = 1.25 kg s−1 . (a) Ambient air at 1 bar and 300...

    You are a conservation biologist, and you discover a small population of plants that live in rocky patches of land on the western side of the Superstition mountains (population A). These plants are biennial, meaning that they reproduce only in their second year of life and then die. The population you discover in Year 1 consists of 150 seeds, 30 one-year-old (vegetative) plants, and 10 two-year-old (flowering) plants. Other biologists at ASU have already done the long and hard research...

    A natural gas-fired furnace in a Textile Plant is used to provide steam at 140 0C. At times of high demand, the furnace supplied heat to the steam at rate of 30 MJ/s. The plant also uses up to 6 MW of electrical power purchased from the local power company. The plant management is considering converting the existing process plant into a Cogeneration Plant to meet both their process-heat and power requirements. Your job is to come up with some...

    Since early Roman days, people have used greenhouses to grow plants—particularly to enjoy fruits and vegetables out of season. But not until the 1990s did greenhouses begin to gain popularity in the United States. The timing couldn’t be better. The amount of farmable land per capita in the world continues to shrink, and over the next 50 years, world population is expected to increase by 3 billion. At the same time, economists estimate the demand for farm products will double....
