Explain the chemistry underlying the disinfection of water by chlorination. What is the active agent in the destruction of pathogens? What are practical sources of this active ingredient?
Chlorination is the process of adding chlorine to water in order to kill germs. Chlorine is oe of the most common and effective disinfectant for water disinfection. It is also widely used because of low cost involved in its application.
Chlorine as a disinfectant
Chlorine kils germs and pathogens (viruses and bacteria) by breaking the chemical bonds present in their molecules. When chlorine is added to water, it starts reacting with the active enzymes present in bacterial cells and one or more hydrogen atoms of the enzyme are effctively replaced by Chlorine atoms. This causes the entire molecule to distort and its structure may fall apart. Ultimately, as enzymes do not function properly, the bacterial cells die.
When chlorine is added to water, it forms hypochlorous acid
Cl2 + H2O HOCl + H+ + Cl-
HOCl is a strong disinfectant and is the active ingredient that kills pathogens. HOCl reacts to form OCl- ions at different pH values
HOCl + H2O OCl- + H3O+
OCl- (hypochlorite ions) is also an active killing agent. However, HOCl is more effective (approximately eight times more) than OCl- because it is uncharged and penetrates the cell wall of bacterias easily

CIO is the active ingredient in bleach and primary disinfection agents of chlorine solutions. It is also a good oxidizing agent. For example, CIO can oxidize sulfhydryl groups in proteins. Which molecular orbital(s) of CIO would you predict to interact most strongly with the sulfhydryl groups in the protein to oxidize them? explain
4. If 15 mg/L of HOCl is added to a potable water for disinfection and the final measured pH is 7.0, what percentage of the HOCl is dissociated? Assume the temperature is 25°C and pKa- 7.54. Note that the dissociation of hypochlorous acid proceeds as follows: 4. Question: What is the active ingredient present in Tea responsible for the reduction of AuNps? Experiment: Synthesize gold nanoparticles of ~ 10-15nm size using Tea leaves as a reducing agent. Synthesis: Step 1: In a 20 ml vial, 0.012g of Gum Arabic was dissolved in 6ml of doubly ionized water D (I). Step 2: 100mg of Tea leaves (Lipton Loose Tea) was added to the above solution. The reaction mixture was stirred continuously at 25 C for 15 min. Step...
