The biochemist makes a polysaccharide by combining 12 molecules of the monosaccharide. What is the chemical formula of the polysaccharide?
A monosaccharide is a carbohydrate and hence would have an emperical formula of (CH2O)n, where n is the number of carbon atoms. So, 12 molecules of monosaccharide would mean (CH2O)12n. But when molecules join via aglycosidic bond 1 H2O is lost. Hence to combine 12 molecules, 11 H2O molecules would be lost making the final emerical formula for the polysaccharide to be C12n (H2O)12n-11.
