Learning occurs by various different ways. Learning theories state that learning can occur by conditioning may it be pavlos conditioning or oprant conditioning.

Albert Bandura proposed social learning theory in which he stated that an individual learns certain behaviours by socially observing them ,or imitating the same behavior that they see happening around them.Bandura used the term modelling instead of immitation, for describing observational learning.

Similarly when a person sees somebody doing certain superstitious behavior , they too learn and perform the same by observing others.

Knocking on the wood is a superstitious belife in response to which people usually perform an act of thouching or knocking on the wood in order to avoid any bad effects. People those who have been doing it have found favourable results in response to the behaviour and so other people tend to immitate the same and learn such behaviours.
