Question 2 Background Social learning theory discusses how individuals learn appropriate behaviors by watching others. Albert Bandura's Bobo Doll experiment demonstrated how this effect works. Question As a researcher, you want to extend Bandura's theory to video games. Design an experiment that would demonstrate social learning effects from video games. Social Learning theory was proposed by Albert Bandura. It has become the most influential theory of learning and developement.

His theory added a social element arguing that people can learn new information and behaviors by watching other people ,known as observational learning or modelling. This type of learning can be used to explain a wide variety of behaviors.

The   three core concepts of Social Learning Theory are

1. People can learn through observation.

2. Internal mental states are an essential part of this process.

3. Just because something has been learned , it does not mean that it will result in a change in behavior.

Bandura identified three basic models of observational learning

1, A live model, which involves an actual individual acting or domenstrating out a behavior. Eg In our life we observe some

people and when we like their charecters we cosider them as a model and try to imitate them and change our behavior in that direction.

2. A verbal instructional model- which involves description and explanation of a behavior. Eg- An autobiography of a person., a charecter depicted in a novel or story etc.

3. A. symbolc model , which involves real or fictional charecters displaying behavior, eg: films television programs, or online media.,vedio games etc.

Mental states are important for learning. One's own mental state and motivation play an important role in taking a decision   whether a behavior is to be learned or not..Bandura describes his approach as a social cognitive theory that is it states that learning ias a cognitive process (throught process) , that takes place in a social context.

Every learning does not necessarily lead to change in behavior. Leaners always  observe models .But the learning to be sucessful the following steps are needed.

1.Attention - Keen attention is needed for learning. If there is a distraction in attention it will sometimes lead to negative effect.

2. Retention. - The ability to store the information in the brain is an important factor in learning.Another thing is although   an individual   store the information sometimes he/she will not be able to pull of the information later and act on it at the time of need.

3. Reproduction - To actually peform the learned behavior further practice is needed. Further  practising the learned behavior leads to improvement and skill advancement.

4. Motivation - An individual has to be motivated to imitate the behavior that he or she has learned from the model.Then only the learning be successful. Reinforcement and punishment plays an important role in motivation.

Bandur's social learning has an important implication in the field of education. Nowadays teachers and parents are recognizing the importance of modeling application.of appropraite behaviors.The classroom strategies such as encouraging children and building self efficacy are also rooted in social learning theory.

Basic assumption of social learning (one sentence)

The basic asumption in social learning theory is that the same learning process in a context of social structure can lead to a change in behavior in both positive and nagative manner.Eg ( sometimes it can lead to confirmity or deviant behavior. One can do rash driving observing that his friends are driving rashly wihout meeting with accidents )

Why vedio games be worthy of studying under social learning theory

Playing aggressive vedio games would  lead to the stimulation of agressive behavior in children. Children will imitate what they see on the screen without thinking about the possible negative outcomes.

Which age group can be targeted for study

To study teenagers can be selected, because studies shows that teens consume 9 hours or more in paying vedio games.In teenagers vediogaming is usually leading to poor school performance and aggression towards others such as peers and family members.
