Answer : In animal cells, active transport system is primarily responsible for setting and maintaining the intracellular concentrations of Na and K and for generating the transmembrane electrical potential. The excess potassium ions within the cells is acheived by the presence of Na+ K+ ATPase pump which carries out active transport against the concentration gradient with the use of metabolic energy.This electrical potential is central to electrical signaling in neurons,

Explanation : The enzyme Na+K+ ATPase couples breakdown of ATP to the simultaneous movement of both Na and K against their electrochemical gradients. For each molecule of ATP converted to ADP and Pi, the transporter moves two K+ ions inward and three Na+ ions outward across the plasma membrane.
