Interference effects are produced at point P on a screen as a result of direct rays from a 501 nm source and reflected rays off the mirror, as seen in the figure below.

If the source is 94 m to the left of the screen, and 1.07 cm above the mirror, calculate the distance y (in millimeters) to the first dark band above the mirror.

Answer #1

so this behaves like a two source with d = 2*1.07 = 2.14 cm

so first dark band when y = (m + 1/2) lambda L/d = 0.5*501.0E-9*94/2.14E-2=1.1E-3 m = 1.1 mm

Screen Problem 3: The figure shows a so called Lloyd's mirror. It is used to generate an interference pattern from the light emitted by a point source onto a screen. Assume the reflection coefficient of the mirror plate is R = 1. (a) What is the condition for the difference of lengths r2 - r of the two rays for an interference hi maximum and minimum to appear? (b) At what position y on the screen do the first Mirror...
