Answer #1

determine the number of zinc atoms in the plating, multiply by 2 to get the number of electrons needed, convert to Coulombs and divide by the current.
atomic weight of zinc Wz = 65.38 g/mole
Zinc atom mass mz = Wz/(1000*Avogadro) = 1.0857E-25 kg
Zinc atom volume Vz = mz/rho = 1.5206E-29 m^3
V(plating) = 150E-9*2*0.01^2 = 2.8E-11 m^3
Natoms = V(plating)/Vz = 1.841E18
Nelectrons = 2*Natoms = 3.683E18
Total charge Q = Nelectrons*1.6022E-19 = 0.59009026 C
t = Q/I = 421.493 s = 421.5 sec appro

    For a science experiment you need to electroplate zinc onto both sides of a very thin, 1.00 cm × 1.00 cm copper sheet. You want the zinc thickness to be 140 nm , and you know that the charge carriers in the ionic solution are divalent (charge 2e) zinc ions. The density of zinc is 7140 kg/m3 If the electroplating apparatus operates at 1.40 mA , how long will it take the zinc to reach the desired thickness?

    For a science experiment you need to electroplate a 120-nm-thick zinc coating onto both sides of a very thin, 2.0 cm × 2.0 cm copper sheet. You know that the charge carriers in the ionic solution are divalent (charge 2e) zinc ions. The density of zinc is 7140 kg/m3. Part A If the electroplating apparatus operates at 2.0 mA , how long will it take the zinc to reach the desired thickness?

    c. In a separate electroplating experiment, if a 5.00 A current was used to electroplate a penny for 5.00 minutes, calculate how many grams of zinc will be plated on the penny. Note you would need to use the Faraday's constant, molar mass of zinc and cathode equation to answer this question. (2 marks)

    a. A sculptor has asked you to help electroplate gold onto a brass statue. You know that the charge carriers in the ionic solution are singly ionized gold ions, and you've calculated that you must deposit 0.50 g of gold to reach the necessary thickness. How much current do you need, in mA, to plate the statue in 4.0 hours? b. A metallic wire has a diameter of 4.12mm. When the current in the wire is 8.00A, the drift velocity...
