this reaction known as radical substitution reaction.

in general when molecules cleavesinto two parts it will form two ions one is cation another one is anion foe eq

R-Cl alkyl halide------> R+ + Cl- alkyl cation and chliride anion , this type of cleavage.

both bonded electron will go to anion.

but some weak covalent bond (HO-OH, X-X halogen, etc) in the presence light will undergo homolytic cleavage.

both bonded electron will be shared by both atom, each one will have one electron, which can be calledas radical. in this case chlorine radical.

during drawing cleavage single hooked arrow will be used to indicate moment of single electron.

in general radical reaction will have 3 steps in mechanism

1) radical intitation

2) radical propagation

3) radical termination

step 1) Cl-Cl in the presence of light cleaves into two Cl radical
