During development of the neuromuscular junction, several developing nerve cells send out axons to the muscle. The first one to reach the muscle sends an autocrine signal to itself to continue to make neurotrophin and a signal to the other nerve cells in the immediate area that inhibits their ability to receive neurotrophin. The lack of neurotrophin induces apoptosis in these extra neuronal cells.
