The graph below shows the demand (D), marginal revenue (MR), marginal cost (MC), and average total cost (ATC) curves for a supplier of bottled water to commercial buildings. The firm operates as a local monopoly. Use the area tool to draw the rectangle that represents the firm's profit if the market quantity is 7,000 bottles.

NOTE: Before referring to the solution below, check whether the quantity sold is same as that given in the question. (Refer to the figure in the question) The question mentions that profit could be increased by lowering the price. But when initial quantity sold is 7,000 bottles, profit is maximized only by increasing the price. The price is determined at the level where the quantity intersects the demand curve. Therefore, when quantity is 7,000 bottles, price is $7. The firms profits are represented by the red triangle in below diagram:

= 1.5*7000

= 10,500

for maximum profit in Monopoly, MR = MC
