What stood out the most from the NPR "What Happened To British Loyalists After The Revolutionary War?" article on the Loyalists, and why?
Many loyalists have left the United States after the war. About
80,000 people fled to Britain or Canada. The Loyalists, being of
Anglican descent, elderly, wealthy, and educated, replaced American
social phobia with their separation. American history brands them
as traitors. After the war, many loyalists were barred from
returning home. As a result of the war, women gained some political
and legal rights. After the war some slaves in the south were
freed. During the war, about 20% of the population was loyal to
Britain.
Let us also examine the changes that took place in the lives of the
faithful after the war. It was in the south that the faithful tried
to fight for the empire. After the war, thousands of loyalists fled
to Britain and Canada.
If the British army did not come close to protecting these
loyalists, they would have been mistreated by the patriots. Many of
them had to flee their homes. The Loyalists wanted a peaceful
protest. Because they believed that violence could lead to
dictatorship and mob violence. Independence, however, meant that
they would lose the economic benefits of membership in the British
trading system. The faithful came from many walks of life.
The number of Americans who sided with the British during the war
is often a matter of debate, as they fought not for the British
crown, but for independence. The British had promised them freedom
in exchange for military service.
