These processes are part of transcription initiation in prokaryotes. The closed complex is formed when holoenzyme (RNA polymerase plus σ-factor) bind to the promotor region on the DNA. The transition from closed to open complex is formation of the transcription bubble where DNA unwinding by helicases, takes place. Once the DNA opens up RNA polymerase starts the transcription and elongation step starts.
