Transcription is the process of rewriting DNA. DNA molecules are made from 4 different nucleotides which acts as building blocks. These building blocks are adenine, thymine, guanine and cytosine. When put together in different chemical combinations they become directions for the functions of the cell molecules which are primarily proteins. When a certain protein is needed, the RNA polymerase enzyme will find the gene for that particular protein and makes an RNA copy of it. DNA and RNA have similar...

Mitochondria and chloroplasts were once free-living bacteria that later migrated into eukaryotic cells. Mitochondria make energy while chloroplasts prepare their own food. How can a mitochondrion live by itself? Explain your answer by mentioning the specific processes that this organelle performs. What does a chloroplast do to survive in its free living condition? What important chemicals does it need froma sorrounding primordial soup to prepare its own food? Apart from the process by which chloroplasts prepare their own food, what...

Until recently, there were two competing theories about the origin of our species- "modern Homo sapiens". The first (single African origin) is that all modern humans descended from a recent ancestor in Africa, less than 200,000 years ago, and that our ancestors replaced the archaic human species they found in their migrations, including Neanderthals and Denisovans. (In the last few years evidence from nuclear genomes of fossil humans has indicated that there was limited interbreeding between the ancestors of modern...

Alternative Comparison-Different Lives Three different plans were presented to the GAO (General Accounting Office) by a high-tech facilities manager for operating a portable cyber-security facility. Plan A: Renewable 1-year contracts with payments of $1 million at the beginning of each year. Plan B: A 2-year contract that requires three payments of $600,000 each, with the first one to be made immediately and the second and third payment made at the beginning of the following two 6-month intervals; no payments required...

ld ts biovs Part II: Analysis of recursive algorithms is somewhat different from that of non-recursive algorithms. We are very much interested in how many times the method gets called. The text refers to this as the number of activations. In inefficient algorithms, the number of calls to a method grows rapidly, in fact much worse than algorithms such as bubble sort. Consider the following: public static void foo ( int n ) { if n <=1 ow ura wor...

Although familial cases of narcolepsy have been reported, most human occurrences are sporadic, and the disorder is generally believed to be multigenic and environmentally influenced (Honda and Matsuki, 1990; Mignot, 1998). In Doberman pinschers, the disorder is transmitted as a single autosomal recessive trait with full penetrance, canarc-1 (Foutz et al., 1979; Baker and Dement, 1985). To unravel the cause of this unique sleep disorder, we undertook the positional cloning of the canine narcolepsy gene. This project led us to...

    3) Image from Biotechnology Explorer Kit, BIO RAD Analysis of DNA Fragments The data you entered for the lambda Hindill digest were the relative positions of DNA bands of known size. Since the exact size and position of these fragments are known, they can be used as standard reference points to estimate the size of unknown fragment bands. A set of fragments of known sizes is called a molecular weight ruler or standards or marker (or sometimes a ladder because...
