\rightarrowThe photosynthetic process canbe divided into 4 prominent steps:-

  • [a] absorption of light.
  • [b] electron transport leading to the reduction of NADP+ to NADPH.
  • [c] generation of ATP, and .
  • [d] conversion of CO2 into glucose [carbon fixation].

Among these, absorption of light by chlorophyll provides directionality to the photosynthetic process.

When chlorophyll absorbs light, the energy excites an electron to a higher energy level.

The hydrogen in the water molecule binds to an acceptor and releases the oxygen.

This is called photolysis of water and this provides direction to the photosynthetic process.
