The vital role played by the supportive of Hong Kong students seems not to influence the decision makers. If students are asked who or what has made the biggest impact on the way they learn the expected answer could include: the coaching school, teachers, or classmates. However, for more than seventy percent of Hong Kong from 7 students surveyed, the answer to this question was unequivocal. These students regard the attitude, encouragement and sometimes forceful influence of their families - especially their parents as the main factor in their academic success. This is true even when the parents themselves have not been educated formally beyond junior high school. Education is rated highly by Hong Kong society yet education decision-makers seem unable to make constructive use of the dedication and energetic commitment these families bring.
Parents who have achieved success though their education are likely to impart, and model, the same values to their children. Obviously such parents are likely to see education as the way for their children to improve their future prospects. In Hong Kong, unlike in many other societies, even parents who have improve their own position in society through manual labour and the application of natural intelligence with little formal education have been found to be more than 90 percent supportive of their own children following the route to higher education as a better preparation for overall success. The practical natural intelligence and hardworking ethic of these parents may have given them great personal success but typically this seen to seen to some extent as the outcome of good luck.
Smart parents with a strongly positive attitude towards education should be a great asset to the reform and improvement of education in Hong Kong. This could easily be combined with their current role of being the motivators most respected by their own children.
