STAR method

The STAR method is a method for responding to question in an interview situation, here an interviewee could provide an answer by describing the situation, task, action, and result.

Examples of different steps in the STAR method.

The following are examples of different steps in the STAR method.

Situation

Staff in my department faced serious pressure when the company set an impractical target date.

Task

As the team leader, I had to motivate everyone to attain the targets before the target date.

Action

I hold routine meetings with the team members to know about the progress and sort out the challenges in attaining the targets before the target date.

Results

Ultimately my team members could attain the target many days before the target date set by the company.

Importance of the STAR method during interviews

The following are the reasons why using the STAR method during the interviews.

  • An interviewee could provide a well-structured answer to the questions of the interviewers,
  • An interviewee could provide a very comprehensive answer to questions.
  • It is highly useful for an interviewee in dealing with competency-based questions.
  • It helps an interviewee in providing a detailed response.
  • An interviewee could answer a question with a short period of thinking.
  • Moreover, an interviewee could easily impress the interviewer.
