Answer #1

The answer is bins

Bins are VNTR alleles of similar size.

In VNTR analysis, bands of similar size are grouped into bins.

VNTR stands for Variable Number of Tandem Repeats.

These are short DNA sequences that repeat with variations in length between individuals in particular loci.

The function of these sequences are unknown. They are used in identification of individuals and therefore, they are referred to as VNTR markers.

Sequences with different number of repeated units are called ALLELES, even though they are non functional.

As different alleles have different lengths, thy can identified by electrophoresis as they get separated according to their length.

LOCI is a particular location in the chromosome

PROFILE : DNA profiling is the method used to distinguish between individuals based on the differences in their DNA.

The steps of VNTR analysis:

  • Isolation of DNA
  • Cut the DNA into small fragments
  • Separation of fragments based on size using gel electrophoresis
  • Transfer the DNA to a membrane
  • Add labelled DNA probe
  • Wash the membrane
  • DNA profiles are obtained and they are analysed.

    31. ANALYSIS Priscilla Lane and Margaret Green studied the linkage relations of three genes affecting coat color in mice: mahogany (mg), agouti (a), and ragged (Rg). They carried out a series of three-point crosses, mating mice that were heterozygous at all three loci with mice that were homozygous for the recessive alleles at these loci (P W. Lane and M. C. Green. 1960. Journal of Heredity 51:228-230). The following table lists the results of the testcrosses. Number Phenotype Rg 1...
