A pair of dice is rolled. We assume that the both the dice are fair and their outcomes are independent of each other. Then there are a total of 36 ( 6x6 ) equally likely outcomes of this roll. Hence, each outcome has the equal probability of 1/36 of occuring. And thus the probabbility of getting a sum of 2 is simply the number of different outcomes that result in a sum of 2 times 1/36. But there is only one outcome, i.e. (1, 1), which results in a sum of 2. Hence, the probability of getting a sum of 2 when a pair of dice is rolled is 1/36.
