Race is a way to identify people for purposes of identifying groups that are distinct from one another. For example, we can use race to identify the group a person belongs to. When people talk about race, they are trying to understand human variation using largely limited parameters and implying that this tells us something fundamental about people, their ancestors and the evolution of the human species. It's fine to have an interest in human diversity, as scientific and sociological motivations certainly come into play, but racial differences, even in the U.S., are complex and involve a vast array of factors, including a diverse array of societies. In saying that there is such a thing as race, we're doing a disservice to scientists who have found no biological basis of race in humans, to those who have discovered no consistent evidence for racial categories in human populations, and to the many people who consider the concept unscientific and unworthy of consideration. Many people in today's society may have an easier time being honest about their own racial identities and opinions if they feel comfortable sharing these facts with others. Instead of feeling obligated to adhere to the view of another person in every aspect, people can develop open, respectful relationships with others and can gain a better understanding of others based on how they perceive them. The social and political implication of using race to define study groups is changing because it is no longer a necessary way of judging people based on their backgrounds. However, it is being suggested that differences in an individual's racial identity are strongly associated with views on gender, sexuality and political affiliation, but that these relationships are moderated by racial prejudice and that racial prejudice moderates these relationships. This study exploits the expected inter-racial variation in public opinion on different issue issues by exploring the interplay between racial prejudice and social group membership.
