On March 6, 2019, Mark Zuckerberg -CEO of Facebook- outlined Facebook’s vision and principles around building a privacy-focused messaging and social networking platform. I would like to comment on Encryption. The end-to-end encryption is a very necessary privacy-focussed principle as the user and recipient are only able to decrypt the messages. Even the service provider of messaging are unaware of the encrypted message. This is an important aspect as the some users need to communicate highly sensitive information without being tapped by any third party. The feature prevents data from being modified. Even if the government authorities ask the service provider companies texts of the messages, they are unable to as they themselves don't have that record.

In many systems providing messaging or mailing platforms the messages pass through the intermediaries and are stored by a third party, from which they are retrieved by the recipient. Now they are encrypted till transit and are stored in the decrpyted form by the third party. This creates an issue as if the data stored can be accesed by an un-authorised party, the information can be misused and modified to any extent. The authentication process to decrypt the encrypted messages needs to be very extensive to prevent MITM attacks.

So in a nutshell data-encryption is an important aspect of data security and its privacy. The platforms must work hard to achieve True-end-to-end-encryption.
