Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which synthesis and secretion of thyroid hormone get increases. Due to hyperthyroidism person may experience weight loss, increased metabolic rate, sweating etc.
Thyroid gland is endocrine organ which plays important role in growth, development, reproduction and metabolism of body.
Thyroid gland is located in the anterior neck below the laryngeal prominence. This gland is butterfly shape having two lobes around the trachea and middle part is isthmus.
Thyroid gland is made up of thyroid follicle lined with follicular cells and parafollicular cells. Thyroidal secretion is of three types. Thyroxin (T4), triiodothyronine (T3) and TSH. Thyroid hormone synthesis and secretion is dependent upon TSH ( Thyroid stimulating hormone). TSH is secreted by anterior pituitary.
Thyroid gland also secretes the calcitonin which plays important role in maintaining calcium balance of the body. TSH is regulated by thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH) which is produced by hypothalamus.
