You evaluate a protein found in frogs, lions, chimpanzees, and humans. You know that humans and chimpanzees are both primates. You also know that humans, chimpanzees, and lions are mammals, but frogs are amphibians. Of the three other kinds of animals, which one would most likely show the least amino acid divergence from humans? Which would show the most? Briefly explain this in terms of common ancestry

Answer #1

Chimpanzees will show least amino acid divergence in proteins from humans because both Chimpanzees and humans belong to order primates of class mammalia so they have more recent common ancestor as compare to lions and frogs because lion belong to order carnivora of class - mammalia so it show more amino acid divergence from human as compare to divergence in primate chimpanzee and less amino acid divergence than human as compare to divergence of amino acid shown by frogs. Frogs will show maximum divergence in the amnio acid of proteins from humans because frogs belong to class amphibia of superclass tetrapoda while other lions and chimpanzee and human belongs to class mammalia of superclasss tetrapoda  so amphibians and humans have distantly related common ancestor .

So increasing divergence in amino acid of protein from humans:-

Frog<Lions<chimpanzee

You recently joined a biochemistry research lab to study protein functions in diseases. In the lab, researchers have been working on a protein kinase, the enzyme that catalyzes the phosphoryl transfer reaction from ATP to the -OH group on serine or threonine residues of the target proteins. The researchers in the lab have found that a point mutation in the gene encoding the protein kinase leads to a change in one amino acid of the enzyme, which causes an increase...

Humans and Chimps share a 9,826 nucleotides out of 10,000 in sequences. Therefore, the Human and Chimp nucleotide difference out of 10,000 is 174. Gorillas and my new species differ by only 165 nucleotides. A) K=(-3/4)In(1-(4(0.0174)/3))=0.0176050171. L=K/2t=0.0176050171/2(6600000)=1.33x10^-9. B) K=(-3/4)In(1-(4(0.0165)/3))=0.0166842067. t=K/2L=0.0166842067. That is 6.2x10^6 years ago. By using the molecular clock method to estimate the two species, we can say that the species most likely diverged nearly 6 million years ago. C) I am uncertain what to write here but I...

6a. You have found a new protein of interest: this protein has a transmembrane domain (as predicted by hydropathy analysis). You want to confirm this and determine which portion of the protein is outside the cell and which portion is inside the cell. You begin with a protease protection assay, the results are below. Does this protein most likely have a transmembrane domain? Is the larger portion inside the cell or outside the cell? Is there anything wrong with the...

Genetics Worksheet Week 3: Gene Regulation and Epigenetics 1. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is caused by a mutation in a gene that is 2.5 million nucleotides in length and encodes a protein called dystrophin. The dystrophin protein itself is 3684 amino acids in length. Calculate below the approximate size of the mRNA that encodes dystrophin. Approximately what percentage of the gene that encodes dystrophin is intron sequence? The human genome encodes a much greater variety and number of proteins than the...

Use of Modern Molecular Techniques to Determine the Synthetic Pathway of a Novel Amino Acid. Most of the biosynthetic pathways described in our book were determined before the development of recombinant DNA technology and genomics, so the techniques were quite different from those that researchers would use today. Through this question, you will explore an example of the use of modern molecular techniques to investigate the pathway of synthesis of a novel amino acid, (2S)-4- amino-2-hydroxybutyrate (AHBA). AHBA is a...
