Answer #1

*Gas exchange cannot occur in the alveoli

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), is any sort of acute lung injury due to variety of factors such as physical injury to lungs, smoke inhalation, pneumonia or due to some types of infection in blood that begin to affect the lungs. The inflamatory responses results in the increase in vascular permeability of the blood vessel surrounding the alveoli , where by the fluid from the blood leaks into the interstitial space around the alveoli first and then enters into the alveoli making the alveoli to be wet and collapse. This causes decrease in the gaseous exchage (diffusion of O2 and CO2) between the alveoli and the capilaries and thus leads to respiratory failure and hypoxia, affecting the oxygen supply to different parts of the body.
