* Meninges of brain = The brain and the spinal cord are protected by skull and vertebral canal, protection is enhanced by the presence of meninges between brain and skull , spinal cord and spinal canal by the presence of meninges.

Meninges are three layers which are -

1. Dura matter.

2. Arachnoid matter.

3. Pia matter.

* Dura matter = It is the outer most double layred membrane .

The outer layer is endosteal layer and inner meningeal layer .In between these two layers cranial venous sinuses is present. Venous blood from brain drains into these sinuses.

Spinal dura matter is extended upto second sacral vertebrae.

The space between dura matter and skull is known as epidural space, it contains blood vessels and aerolar connective tissue . Nerves entering and leaving the spinal cord passes through epidural space.

* Arachnoid matter = This is the thin transparent membrane that loosely surrounds the brain without dipping into its sulci. It bridges all the irreguarities of the brain.

It is seprated from duramatter by subdural space, which contains small amount of serous fluids and from pia matter it is seprated by subarachnoid space which contains cerebrospinal fluids.

It provides sheath for cranial nerves as far as they exit from the skull.

Arachnoid villi, the finger like small projections are present in the subarachnoid space . Their function is to absorb the CSF..

* Pia matter = Thin vascular layer that closely invests the brain , dipping into sulci and other regularities.

This is madeup from connective tissue contain many minute blood vessels.
