Layers in highway pavement are (from bottom to top) Sub-soil,Subgrade, Sub-base, base and surface course.

Sub-Base course is made of granular materials, which acts as drainage purpose in highway pavement.

Layers in railroad track bed are (from bottom to top) Sub-soil, Subgrade, Formation, Ballast and sub balast, sleepers and rails.

Ballast is made of mainly coarse aggregates, which acts as drainage purpose in railway track bed.
