The responsibilities of the FAA:-

  • Regulating the FAA to promote safety within the U.S. and other countries
  • Encouraging and developing civil aeronautics
  • Developing and operating a system of air traffic control and navigation for both military and civil aircraft;
  • Researching and developing the civil aeronautics and National Airspace System
  • Developing and carrying out programs to control aircraft noise and environmental effects
  • Regulating U.S. commercial space transportations.

The FAA’s key activities:-

  • Safety Regulation:- Issuing and enforcing regulations and minimum standards covering operating, manufacturing, and maintaining aircraft.
  • Airspace and Air Traffic Management:- The efficient and safe use of navigable airspace is one of the FAA’s primary objectives. The Administration operates a network of airport towers, control centers, air route traffic control centers, and flight service stations, as well as developing air traffic rules, assignment of the use of airspace, and the control of air traffic.
  • Civil Aviation Abroad:- It exchanges aeronautical information with foreign authorities,  airmen, certifies foreign repair shops and mechanics, provides technical aid and training, negotiates bilateral airworthiness agreements with other countries, and takes part in international conferences.
  • Commercial Space Transportation:- The FAA regulates and encourages the U.S. commercial space transportation industry, licensing commercial space launch facilities, and private launches of space payloads on expendable launch vehicles.
  • Research, Engineering, and Development:-The FAA undertakes research on, and development of, the systems and procedures needed for an efficient and safe system of air navigation and air traffic control. The Administration helps develop better engines, aircraft, and equipment and tests/ evaluates aviation systems, materials, devices, and procedures. It also undertakes aeromedical research.

HISTORY OF ATC:-

Archie William Leagues ( 1907-1986), is acknowledged as the first U.S. Air traffic controller claims for the first air traffic controller largely unchallenged. after becoming a licensed airplane and engine mechanic, flying and brainstorming around Illinois and Missouri with his 'flying circus', how was hired by the city to direct the growing air traffic at St. Louis's Lambert Field. His 'controller tower' was a wheelbarrow on which he mounted a beach umbrella for the summer heat.
