Answer #1

Since there is a positive and linear relationship between the height (in inches) and weight (in pounds),

so if we construct a regression equation with age as the explanatory variable and ability test score as the response variable, we know for certain that -

  • The slope will be positive.

Formula for slope : b_1 = r*\frac{s_y}{s_x} , since r > 0, and sx > 0 and sy > 0, that implies b1 > 0.

Formula for intercept : b_0 = \bar{y}-b_1*\bar{x} , if \bar{y}<b_1*\bar{x} , then intercept b0 can be negative.

Question 1 Marmots are large, stocky animals. Yellow-bellied marmots are easily identified by the brownish fur on their back coupled with their yellow to orange undersides. Males are larger than females They usually weigh about ten pounds, and grow to about 30 inches. The mean length of 50 male marmots was found to be 10.74 inches with a standard deviation of 6.44 inches. The mean weight was found to be 7.7 pounds with a standard deviation of 2.64 pounds (a)...

Birth weight and gestational age. The Child Health and Development Studies considered pregnancies among women in the San Francisco East Bay area. Researchers took a random sample of 50 pregnancies and used statistical software to construct a linear regression model to predict a baby's birth weight in ounces using the gestation age (the number of days the mother was pregnant). A portion of the computer output and the scatter plot is shown below. Round all calculated results to four decimal...
