What steps can you take to be better prepared to gather the proper information when dealing with people whose emotions have gotten the better of them? What steps can you take to make sure you are getting the most accurate information from them?
Ans. According to Passer & Smith (2011), Emotions are defined as feeling states that involve a pattern of cognitive, physiological and behavioural reactions to events.
Follwing steps can be taken to gather the proper information when dealing with people whose emotions have gotten the better of them:-
1. Helping them in identifying their emotions
2. Asking them to keep an emotion journal wherein they record their feelings toward a particular emotions.
3. Showing them movies wherein people express emotions.
4. Providing them the social support for the expression of their emotions.
5. Practising emotional intelligence skills with them.
The fact that they didn't express their emotions earlier, is the reason their emotions have taken a toll on them and it is very important for them to recognise these emotions, so that they can understand them and are further able to manage them effectively. Thus, developing emotional intelligence in them. Emotional intelligence is a skill, and some people are better at recognizing and communicating emotions than others.
Research on the Big Five personality traits i.e openness, extroversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and neuroticism, have shown that people high in extroversion tend to have higher emotional expressiveness, while people high in neuroticism tend to be less expressive. So, just like other skills, the ability to communicate feelings can be strengthened through practice, and a big part of it is first recognizing the emotions one is having, as well as what’s causing them.
Following steps can be taken to make sure tha one is getting the most accurate information from them:-
1. Being emotionally self aware onself.
2. Practising emotional intelligence with them through role plays
3. Rewarding them when they express their emotions.
4. Empathise with them so that they understand that poeple are there to listen.
5. Engaging them in activities with their own family so that they all are able to understand each other better and this further will lead to better emotional well-being.
So, exploring one's emotions is a worthy endeavor for anyone hoping to know and develop themselves, build healthy relationships, and pursue what they want in life. Research has shown that emotional intelligence is more important than IQ, showing that it “predicts over 54% of the variation in success, in relationships, health, and quality of life.Theregore, developing emotional intelligence is vital for the well-being of the person.
