Ans. Differences between mitosis and meiosis are -

Mitosis Meiosis
It is an equational division I.e., number of chromosomes in daughter cells is similar to that of parent cell. It a Reductional division I.e., number of chromosomes in daughter cells is reduced to half as compared to the number of chromosomes in parent cell.
Crossing over do not occur crossing over occurs in pachytene of prophase I.
No chiasmata formation Chiasmata is formed during diplotene of prophase I.
It produces genetically identical cells It gives rise to genetically unique cells.
Prophase has no sub stages Prophase has 5 sub stages- Leptotene, Zygotene, pachytene, diplotene and diakinesis
New variations are not produced Variations are produced due to crossing over.
Involved in growth and repair role in sexual reproduction in gametes formation.
