Case 25.1: Goals and Objectives for La-Ron

La-Ron was referred to your agency after his wife was killed in an accident at the hospital where she worked. The hospital paid La-Ron a sum of money after the accident. La-Ron, who also works at the hospital as an orderly, has two children under the age of 5. Before his wife died, La-Ron worked the day shift and his wife worked the night shift. They all had dinner together, and his wife saw the children off to school in the morning.

"It wasn't ideal," La-Ron tells you. "We got by though, we got by." But, La-Ron is now clearly overwhelmed. Members of his church are trying to pitch in, but their help is inconsistent. La-Ron has missed a few days of work because he could not find someone to be with the children in the morning. He tells you he wants to go back to school and get a surgical tech degree. "I need another pay grade for these kids."

As La-Ron talks about his wife and his loss and the loss the children are feeling, his eyes well up with tears and he says things like, "I don't know where to start" and "I don't know where to turn." At one point, La-Ron tells you his boss at work is very supportive and understanding and his minister has been helpful. He also says that he isn't sure he is a good parent. "She did most of it and she laid down the law. Them kids were tops in kindergarten." He smiles. "Tops, you know. Great kids."

1. What are La-Ron's strengths?

2. How will you highlight and draw on La-Ron's strengths in your work with him?

3. State two goals you might establish with La-Ron.

4. Develop a set of objectives for each goal.

Answer #1

Ans 1. La-Rons strengths are his ability to bear the loss of his wife. 2. He is concerned about the children's future. 3. His ability to adjust although it was difficult for them to work in two different shifts, they adjusted to it .4. To support his children he wants to study further and obtain a surgical tech degree so that his pay would increase. 5. He is emotional, he appreciates his wife and her effort that made the children good students in kindergarten, he appreciates his children and feel proud of it.

2. La Ron's strength like his ability to adjust and wants to do further studies to support the children are appreciating, as he did not find anyone to look after the children his concern is right. He can take the help of the agencies through social workers who work for the people who need support, they can be contacted for the daycare of the children, and he can enroll himself for further studies. He is having the sum received from the hospital as compensation; he can use that for his kids.

3. Out of the two Goals, one is improving his self-esteem and confidence and second is encourage him to study further.

He has shown his willingness to study further so that he can make the financial losses and support the children. If he has confidence and self-esteem he can manage his work by taking the help of some external source like daycare centers that are within his affordable income.

4. The set of objectives would be to think and draw the strategy that would help in reaching the goal, like what action would be required and how to implement that action to achieve the set goal.

5. He is depressed the first goal of objective would be improving his self-esteem and confidence, and for improving his self-esteem the talk therapy can be useful because he shows his willingness to do further studies he requires support by doing talk therapy in a group he would come across good ideas and solutions
