Limited Detection Ranges Tests will only be as good as the reach of the probe. If the probe is unable to emit sound waves to certain areas of a test object, the end result will be skewed data that doesn't paint a full picture of an item's viability. When using an ultrasonic arm scanner, for instance, you will only get limited testing data based on the scanner arm's size. Standard scanners also have the same confined reach due to the limited capacity of the X-Y interface.

Thin, flexible tactile force sensors represent tremendous opportunity in providing a sense of touch, or haptic feedback, that is so vital in appropriate handling of objects, whether during delicate surgical procedures or in industrial manufacturing applications where improper handling of components during assembly can be costly. As robots become increasingly lifelike, tactile sensors also play a role in helping the robot exhibit better balance and a more human-like gait.

The actuator technology has existed for more than 50 years, but better piston seals and rod wiper seals (of modern materials) make pneumatic actuators more resilient and efficient than ever. These seals reduce leakage and withstand extreme temperatures to let engineers use the actuators in more environments. Likewise, surfaces with permanent lubrication, servo-pneumatic controls, improved corrosion resistance and air- cushioning features make pneumatic actuators more useful than ever. To review, pneumatics is the technology of compressed air. However, in some circles, it's more fashionable to refer to it as a type of automation control. In robotics, an end effector is the device at the end of a robotic arm, designed to interact with the environment. The exact nature of this device depends on the application of the robot. In the strict definition, which originates from serial robotic manipulators, the end effector means the last link (or end) of the robot. At this endpoint, the tools are attached. In a wider sense, an end effector can be seen as the part of a robot that interacts with the work environment. This does not refer to the wheels of a mobile robot or the feet of a humanoid robot, which are not end effectors but rather part of a robot's mobility. End effectors may consist of a gripper or a tool. When referring to robotic prehension there are four general categories of robot grippers:[1] 1. Impactive: jaws or claws which physically grasp by direct impact upon the object. 2. Ingressive: pins, needles or hackles which physically penetrate the surface of the object (used in textile, carbon and glass fiber handling). 3. Astrictive: attractive forces applied to the objects surface (whether by vacuum, magneto- or electroadhesion). 4. Contigutive: requiring direct contact for adhesion to take place (such as glue, surface tension or freezing).
