Question
  1. Each bean represents a single allele. If the organisms in the population are diploid (they have two alleles for each gene), how many individuals are in the population?

  1. Since each bean represents a single allele:

  1. What allele does the black (or red) bean represent?

  1. What allele does the brown (or white) bean represent?

  1. What color combination of two beans represents a:

  1. homozygous dominant individual?

  1. Homozygous recessive individual?

  1. Heterozygous individual?

Answer #1

Each bean represents a single allele. In the question the organisms in the population are diploid (they have two alleles for each gene). There are a total of 32 black and 48 brown beans. The total number of beans is 32+40= 80, i.e 80 alleles are present. Now since the organisms ar diploid so there are 80/2 = 40 individuals in the population.

According to the information given , the black (or red) bean represent the dominant allele, R.

The brown (or white) bean represent the recessive allele, r.

The color combination of two beans represents the colour of the dominant allele when present in homo or heterozygous forms. The recessive allele do not show any colour in presence of the dominant allele.

a:homozygous dominant individual - RR (black/red)
b.Homozygous recessive individual - rr (brown/white)
c. Heterozygous individual -Rr (black/red)

Fur color in dogs can be black, brown or white. The B gene is responsible for fur color. Dogs that inherit a dominant B will have black fur. Dogs that inherit 2 recessive alleles, bb, will have brown color. There is a second gene that contributes to fur color in dogs: gene I. For this exercise we will be re-enacting founder effect on a population of hypothetical people. You can use red and white beans (or any other small household item that comes in two colors) to complete the exercise. The beans will represent genes and the different colors will represent different alleles (gene variants). Red beans will represent the dominant (R) allele for the trait, while white beans will represent the recessive (r) allele. Humans have two copies of each gene, so...
