Hurricane Katrina is the worst natural disaster faced by the US population .It costed the lives of many and left many homeless .It impacted the hospital and health community in the following ways

  • Lack of emergency preparedness
  • Inadequate and shortage of medical supplies, beds to accommodate patient
  • a difficult situation to make the priority of plan, nurses and doctors were forced to do euthanasia on the basic of their best clinical practice. Which has led to severe controversy later.
  • Lack of communication
  • No good water was availabe for the patient not the staff
  • Shortage of power supply making a huge query on the operation of the medical equipment

Some of the steps which could have been taken earlier are

  • Shifting the majority of the population into a camp and provide a safe environment
  • Distribution of patient to all major hospital through airlift or airway method .This could have reduced the shortage faced for the appropriate distribution of medical supplies
