Conflict is an issue that is said to have occupied the thinking of humankind more than any other, save only god and love.¹ This is probably because conflict and violence have not only been a ubiquitous phenomenon in the progress of human history but have often been the reason for the creation of history itself.

The events of the Trojan Wars, catalogued in the Iliad of Homer, exist as an example of the first written primary source record of the history of mankind and was inspired by conflict. This is also true of primary source histories of medieval warfare, modern accounts of the first and second world wars and also contemporary wars in the Arabian Gulf. Some would argue that this is to be expected, as in a Hobbsean world, war and conflict is a state of nature.
