suppose joey is a five year old (your friend's, your nephew, your neighbor, just a kid you care about) accompanies you to the store (pre corona; no virus to worry about). as you are happily shopping, joey sees candy and demands to have one. you of course tell him nicely that candy is not good for him, he insists. you try to explain that his teeth will have cavities, he screams, you explain his mommy (daddy, etc.) will kill you, he throws a tantrum fit with feet in the air, tears pouring, face catchup red, and of course everyone is giving you the look....

what is to do:

1) shut him up, give him the candy.

2) pick him up and give him the beating of his life.

3) tell him what will happen when you get home (a big beating).

4) take him to the car till he cools off, then back to shopping.

5) keep shopping and just ignore him. let people look all they want.

6) go home without the groceries and tell joey there are no snacks or dinner till forever.

Answer #1

5) keep shopping and just ignore him. let people look all they want. This is the best way to get Joey to stop throwing his tantrum. If you end up buying the candy for him, it would act like a reinforcement and he would throw a tantrum everytime he is at the store. Beating him is not likely to improve his behavior and may also cause him psychological and physical harm. Telling him about what would happen at home would also be futile as kids do not have this type of foresight. Simply ignoring him and paying him no attention will reduce this type of behavior.
