Answer #1

Solution:

A regular modern-day engine is made up of hundreds of moving pieces in complete harmony. These pieces often have to mesh with one another or slide over. This can lead to a huge amount of resistance and heat if not properly lubricated. Engine oil not only serves a means of proper lubrication but also dissipates heat and acts as a cooling medium. Therefore it will be extremely difficult and dangerous to operate an engine without any engine oil in it. However if say hypothetically you are to operate one without any engine oil, then the life of the engine will severely depends on the RPM of operation and the materials used. Typically without oil, the engine runs for around 15 minutes without bursting into a cloud of smoke, but taking it apart reveals some serious damage. Lacking proper lubrication, all the metal components in the engine rub against each other, causing an incredible amount of premature wear. However some engines might be able to sustain this wear for up to an hour of usuage.

Q2) Engine oil is to be cooled by water in a condenser. The engine oil enters the condenser with a mass flow rate of 6 kg/min at 1 MPa and 70'C and leaves at 35°C. The cooling water enters at 300 kPa and 15°C and leaves at 25°C. Neglecting any pressure drops, determine a) the mass flow rate of the cooling water required, and b) the heat transfer rate from the engine oil to water. Water 15°C Control Volume Heat...

The design. specifications, require a material with minimum tensile strength of 54 MPa\and a hardness of at least 85 HB (brinell hardness). Additional consideration should be given to, weight minimization (because of the requirement to reduce engine total weight), corrosion resistance (due to extreme weather condition), machinability (to achieve net shape for assembly), and appearance.
