Answer #1

1. Natural selection is the differential survival and reproduction of individuals due to differences in phenotype. It is a key mechanism of evolution, the change in the heritable traits characteristic of a population over generations.Natural selection occurs when some of those traits help some individuals survive and reproduce more than others. That causes their genes to become more common in the population over time, and it's the way species evolve to adapt to changes in their environment.

2. a. true.Natural selection explains how genetic traits of a species may change over time. This may lead to speciation, the formation of a distinct new species.

b. true. A good example of this is the fur color of mice. It’s advantageous if mice blend in with their habitat so that they can avoid predators. In the forest, it will be more likely that mice take on a darker color to match the earth. If you were to take a mouse with dark fur out of their original habitat and place it on a white sandy beach, it will get snatched up by a bird very quickly because it’s so easy to see.

c.true. Genetic variation is essential for natural selection because natural selection can only increase or decrease frequency of alleles that already exist in the population. Genetic variation is caused by: mutation. random mating between organisms.

d. true. If we talk about genotype fitness, then yes an organism's fitness depends on where it lives. Fitness is a handy concept because it lumps everything that matters to natural selection (survival, mate-finding, reproduction) into one idea. The fittest individual is not necessarily the strongest, fastest, or biggest.
