The population of red foxes in Jefferson County (JeffCo) has a small percentage of black foxes. The black coloration is a result of a recessive trait. The number of black foxes in the population has remained stable for over 10 years. It is expected that the reintroduction of wolves to the area will result in a decrease in the proportion of black foxes in the population. explain why the population was likely stable for 10 years and then explain the likely mechanism for change in the future.

By defination a stable populations have a age specific fertility rates that remain constant throughout time. The population was stable over the period of 10 years as their were no apex predators available during this time.The black foxes were not geting hunted and hence maintained a stable population

Since the apex predator is reintroduced in the ecosystem ( phenomenon known as cascade effect ) will come into picture. Since black foxes are due to a recessive trait, it is very much possible that they get extinct with passage of time causing dramatic changes in the ecosystem structure and nutrient cycling.
