Snowshoe hare, found in the arctic and above tree line in Colorado, have white coats in the winter and brown coats in the summer. Why do you think that is? What is likely the primary selective pressure that has resulted in this seasonal color change? Is this a form of disruptive selection? Why or why not?

Answer #1

Ans .Every organism have certain characteristics to live in a particular environment and habitats and these characters are called as adaptations. The snowshoe hare has white coat in winter while brown coat in summer .It is camouflaged from its predation for most of year .It is not disruptive selection because in disruptive selection the extreme phenotypes in population leaves more offsprings than intermediate phenotypes which has lower fitness .While in this case intermediate phenotypes are promoted .

The Arctic hare (Lepus arcticus) changes its coat color every spring from white to brown to maintain camouflage as the snow melts (in order to avoid predation); however, the precise timing of this color transition varies slightly among individuals. You find a best fit linear least squares regression of y = 0.25 x + 0.023 between average parent and offspring times of color transition. On average hares start to change color on the 15th of April. Following a particularly warm...
