Search Engines

Search engines are the opening portals to internet. When we have questions, doubts or want to search an answer to a particular topic, search engines like Google, Yahoo, Microsoft edge are used to get answers. In short, search engines provide answers to the questions, requests or queries of its users. But there is lot of process that goes behind displaying correct pages to the front-end users. Everyday trillions of data is generated and stored in databases. So, search engines need different mechanisms and algorithms to discover, analyse, categorize and rank the websites in net according to their importance. It is a complex process and search engines look at numerous factors including relevancy of question, speed of site, quality of data, metadata and type of request based on user's queries. Each data point is combined to calculate over all quality of page and ranked in the order (Miller, 2019).

How Do Search Engines Work?

Search engines follow three fundamental processes to achieve its objectives. First the data has to be uploaded on the net in respective search engines. Then 3 actions taken are

Crawling: Bots and Spiders scour the internet for content whether it is existing content or newly uploaded through URLs, sitemaps and codes to discover and understand the type of content stored

Indexing: once the relevant information is grabbed from sites through crawling, search engines need to decide how to organize the content. The indexing is done according to positive and negative signals of the site

Ranking: websites are displayed on the search engine result page (SERP) after deciding on what content to be displayed first and where according to user’s query and relevancy of the data in sites. Through this ranking, the websites are displayed to the front end user in an order. Generally, the topmost shown sites have highest ranking factor in terms of quality and relevance.
